Biography
ASHNIKKO makes music for the girls in the club with their heels in their hands, mascara running down their cheeks as they screech “This is my song!” and scurry to the dancefloor. The perfect antidote for coy pop sexuality in 2019, she’d rather reject the cautious euphemisms and tell a crowd of people to eat her pussy without shame.
Her upbringing might have been hampered by her parent’s Bible-thumping heritage, but her mother’s liberal approach to sexuality means she knew it was never shameful to talk about or explore her own body. That’s an imperative part of the ASHNIKKO manifesto: that no woman has the responsibility to shrink herself or shy away from her brilliance at the hands of patriarchal power
The music industry has objectified, shrunk and sexualised women for so long, whether the artist liked it or not. But with Ashnikko at the fore, the table’s turn: the gatekeepers get put in their place, and an outspoken woman gets to speak frankly about things that matter to her, be it imbued with genuine and necessary anger or a sense of playfulness we can all sing along to. Now’s the time for people to realise: if men can’t handle a sexually liberated woman, that’s not Ashnikko’s problem – it’s theirs.
